Or rather, Tying Flies or Fly Tying?

Well, it was a fly tying demonstration held at Hunting and Fishing Invercargill by the Southland Fly Fishing Club, which I am soon to be a part of.

It was a pleasure to meet both Dave and Gerda from the Southland Fly Fishing Club, & I would like to thank them both for a wonderfully informative few of hours.

I only expected to be there maybe an hour or so, but after nearly 3 hours I walked away with a wealth of information regarding tying flies for fishing the southland area.

While I received 24 flies with my new fly rod, I do plan to tie my own flies as I find the idea of tying my own to be a good way to relax and then I also get the thrill that I "hopefully" landed a fish with my own work. :)

I have managed to identify some of the free flies I received, there are a few that I will be asking around to help identify those I couldn't identify.

I also need to figure out which ones are dry flies, nymphs etc.

My Flies by Dave Harris

I have downloaded, printed and bound My Flies by Dave Harris from the Southland Fly Fishing Club website. (link below) of which I purchased Black Magic A14 hooks to start tying up some Hare & Copper Nymphs as these looked the easiest to tie.

Now in the process of obtaining some supplies to start tying my own. It is a shame that there does not appear to be any local fishing shops that sell fly tying materials. Hunting & Fishing had a selection of hooks and pre-made flies but no threads or the likes. So, I'm going to have to order online which means I'll have to wait due to cost of postage making it more expensive than buying locally.

I am looking forward to becoming part of the Southland Fly Fishing Club and getting out there with flies I have tied.
